Creative expression has always been important to me, although it wasn’t until later in life that I started to really honour that. In 2012 I began a painting class in Guildford as a much needed diversion from a demanding career as a mental health nurse. Gradually I've built on those first tentative explorations until, stopping work and moving to North Cornwall in early 2020, my passion for art took off, ignited by the beauty, rawness of energy and open space of my new surroundings.
Visiting a particular place, I like to spend time simply being still, easing into the experience of being there and settling in with all the different sense impressions. Once I'm rooted there, I can then pick up pencil or brush and begin to draw or paint, making studies that I translate into final artworks in the studio.
As a self-taught artist, I've learned so much along the way from some gifted artist teachers – initially Kim O'Neil in Surrey and more recently Claire Winfield in Cornwall - as well as many others on workshops and courses over the years. I recently completed the excellent Newlyn Art School one year online landscape course which supported me to explore other media such as print and ink including making my own materials from natural pigments.
I've taken part in numerous group exhibitions, with Surrey Contemporaries when I lived in Guildford and more recently in Bude, with a group of five women artists in 2024 and in 2025 as part of the Summer Smalls exhibition at Teyr Art Gallery
The craft and skills aspect of art making is endlessly rewarding as are all the limitless possibilities of different directions to explore. I plan to document some of these art adventures in my occasional newsletters.
I'm keen to share this journey and would warmly welcome hearing from you if you'd like to connect.
